U.S.-Canada Beyond the Border
A Shared Vision for Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness
On February 4, 2011, the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of the United States issued Beyond the Border: A Shared Vision for Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness. The Declaration articulated a perimeter approach to security in which both nations would work together to address threats at the earliest point possible – within, at, and away from our borders – and, by doing so, facilitate the legitimate flow of people and goods into both countries and across the shared border.
The United States and Canada have a $1.3 trillion trade and investment relationship. The broad scope of U.S.-Canadian bilateral relations includes extensive economic, cultural, and educational ties with nearly $2 billion in two-way trade in goods and services, and more than 300,000 border crossings each day.
