North AmericaN Commercial Platform
The United States, Canada, and Mexico comprise one of the most competitive and successful economic regions in the world. The economic competitiveness of North America has been deepened and sustained by economic and commercial cooperation, integration, and policy alignment. U.S. trade with Canada and Mexico has more than tripled since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) became effective in 1994, and has grown faster than any other U.S. trade partnership. Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. continue to enhance their interdependent and beneficial economic relationships. The North American Leaders’ Summit and the North American Competiveness and Innovation Conference serve as fora to deepen economic and commercial cooperation. These events drive the agenda for the North American Competitiveness Workplan, which aims to strengthen the overall commercial relationship through trilateral cooperation on areas ranging from investment to asset mapping. We are also working bilaterally through mechanisms such as the U.S.-Mexico High Level Economic Dialogue, the U.S.-Mexico 21st Century Border Management, and the U.S.-Canada Beyond the Border trade facilitation initiatives.
