Water Tech Association's First Office Abroad Working to Build Capacity, Meet Demand
AWWA, the American Water Works Association, opened its Mumbai office in November of 2015 as part of its MDCP cooperative agreement with ITA. From its new base on the other side of the world, AWWA can help Indian water officials to identify what kinds of technology and processes can best be integrated into its growing water infrastructure. image: AWWA
Mumbai Office is Test Case for International Strategy
Opening an office in another country is one approach that AWWA considered in developing its international strategy. AWWA has also increased its international presence through sponsorship of a USA pavilion at Singapore International Water Week to bring 25 water equipment manufacturers from the United States to this important expo. While India has enormous unmet needs in the water sector, more developed international markets continue to have strong demand, including Australia, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
The choice of India for AWWA's first office abroad is supported, of course, by the great need. For every U.S. resident, there are four in India, they live in an area one fourth the size of the United States but the country's water infrastructure is only a fraction of the size of the U.S. water infrastructure. But continued economic growth means that India will invest in water infrastructure as it develops.
U.S. providers of water technology and services have a bright future in India. It will take time, but India's water technology industry is still in its infancy. AWWA's agreement with the Indian Water Works Association was established only in 2002. Since its opening in late 2015, AWWA's India office has put on a major conference, workshop, or similar meeting every couple of months. These kinds of events help water works designers and other officials as they plan to build and bolster India's water infrastructure. As projects start to become reality, more and more U.S. firms can be hired to provide necessary products and services.
