Exports Help NYC Apparel Firm Post Exponential Growth
Offering fashion at the very best prices, the Jump Design Group is today one of the largest manufacturers of social occasion dresses, eveningwear and daytime dresses. But the firm was much smaller when it started to consider exporting as part of its business strategy. Sales in 2013 had grown to about 20 times what they were when Jump Design Group started participating in the New York Fashion International MDCP project in 2003. photo: Jump Design Group
MDCP Gateway to Commercial Service Help
The MDCP project introduced Jump Design Group and many other NYC-based apparel firms to exporting via how-to seminars and other activities. Export education presenters included staff from ITA's U.S. Commercial Service (CS) and Industry & Analysis (I&A) units. From 2005 onward, Jump Design Group worked closely with Dr. Anastasia Xenias Senior International Trade Specialist at CS's New York U.S. Export Assistance Center.
To expand its business, Jump Design Group has used Commercial Service counseling, Gold Key Service, business facilitation services, market research, international trade shows recommended by CS staff, and CS-generated trade leads. The firm has worked with ITA's CS posts from around the world including Dusseldorf, Milan, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Athens, Istanbul, Dublin, and Dubai. Beginning July 2006, at the recommendation of Commercial Specialist Birgit Hesse of CS Dusseldorf and Dr. Xenias, the firm began exhibiting in CPD, the world’s largest apparel trade show in Germany.
Forty Minute Sellout
By the end of 2013, Jump Design Group had exhibited for five seasons in a row at CPD. There, the firm found new international accounts in Moscow, Prague, Athens, Lebanon, and the UK. Foreign trade missions followed as well, including the Netherlands and Belgium. Soon Jump Design Group was also selling to stores in Canada, Mexico, and Spain. By 2013, the firm was selling to over 20 international stores and home shopping networks as well. The firm’s first show for QVC Europe was for the Tiana B brand. The collection sold out completely in 40 minutes. Now Jump Design Group is also successful selling Made in NYC dresses on China's equivalent of QVC.
The firm is now an able exporter with several years experience in various markets. Approximately 20 percent of the firm's revenue is from exporting. The company has received the Department of Commerce Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Achievement in Exporting and many other accolades from trade organizations. Looking back, company founder Glenn Schlossberg noted that “the US Commercial Service has been an invaluable tool in building our export business.”
The firm is committed to Made in New York and the majority of its production of over 4 million dresses annually is still Made in New York. Jump Design Group directly employs approximately 200 New Yorkers and indirectly employs an additional 2,000 workers in garment factories and distribution in the New York area. Here's a video summary of how Jump Design Group is doing as of late 2016.
