Hong Kong Filmart, the world’s second largest film exhibition, took place March 19-22, 2012. The show attracted 648 companies from 33 countries, and close to 5,800 buyers from 53 countries. There were 42 U.S. exhibitors, representing a 40% increase over the 2011 show.
Commercial Service (CS) Hong Kong, part of ITA's Global Markets business unit, and the International Film and Television Alliance (IFTA) organized an American Pavilion featuring 42 U.S. film distribution and production companies, 20 of which were new to the market or the show. The pavilion was something that IFTA, representing the U.S. industry, had not been able to do prior to receiving a $127,058 MDCP award from ITA.
Joint Effort by ITA Team Members in East Asia and DC
CS offices in Asia recruited 200 buyers from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Korea, Taiwan, and China. DC-based Industry Specialist Andrea Da Silva and foreign-based CS specialists coordinated closely with IFTA, provided market research and facilitated meetings between the American exhibitors and the many Asian buyers.
Consul General Stephen Young joined show organizer and premier partner Hong Kong Trade Development Council at a special networking reception for the U.S. exhibitors. The reception was made possible under the Pacific Bridge Initiative, a unique public-private partnership to expand U.S. exports to and through Hong Kong. By the show’s end, 21 U.S. exhibitors reported closing 89 deals with buyers in 16 countries totaling $7.5 million.
