Relationships Help Facilitate Delicate Care Decisions
For most healthcare facilities the universe of those served is geographically limited to a metropolitan area or region within one or two U.S. states. But some provide care that is hard to find outside the United States. For patients who need specialized treatment, a leading research or teaching hospital in the United States is the best option.
Matching international patients with the right care in the United States is both a difficult and delicate propostition. U.S. healthcare providers are committed to their mission to heal and help. And many of them seek to help healthcare providers abroad to expand their capacity and expertise. They are not interested in "selling as many widgets as possible to foreign customers." Thanks to site visits to U.S. facilities, ITA's locally engaged staff in China have come to understand the concerns of U.S. healthcare providers and their role in providing care to patients from outside the United States.
Best Practices and Tools
And it is good to know you are not alone. U.S. healthcare providers that had specialized services not available to most people outside of North America and Western Europe came together to share best practices and to quantify trends in international healthcare. In 2010 they formed the U.S. Cooperative for International Patient Programs. USCIPP's formation itself was the result of an MDCP project.
One of the tools that USCIPP created is the ChooseUSHealth website. The site was launched as part of second MDCP project that began in late 2015. The outreach, including ChooseUSHealth in Mandarin, has resulted in nine U.S. hospitals reporting numerous visits from patients from China in the 2 1/2 years ended December 31 2018.
USCIPP is a membership program of The National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL). The ChooseUSHealth campaign is a core element in NCHL's Market Development Cooperator Program (MDCP) project.
