PROJECT PROFILE: AMT--The Association For Manufacturing Technology (2012 award)
Brazil: The Next Logical Market
In 2012, when AMT applied for MDCP funding, the largest markets for machine tools and other manufacturing technology were the United States, Japan, Germany, and China. Other mature markets are to be found in Europe. There were several less mature growing markets where demand for manufacturing technology was growing fast and the market potential was great. India and Mexico are two examples. But AMT previously established technical centers in China, India, and Mexico. The next logical market for AMT to undertake a similar initiative was Brazil.

By 2013, AMT's Sao Paulo Technology Center became operational. At the Center AMT members can establish operations within Brazil to build relationships and explore the market’s potential. Services include sales and marketing assistance for reaching customers in Brazil; HR services such as employee proxy hiring for sales, service, and engineering positions; office space for meeting with customers and prospects; field service support for a U.S. firm's equipment in Brazil; and in-depth assistance for navigating Brazilian business practices. AMT appointed Achilles Arbex as General Manager of the Sao Paulo Technology Center.
Arbex previously worked for Dana Industries and transmission manufacturer ZF, and is an expert on the Brazilian manufacturing industry, including automotive, aerospace, electric and electronic, oil and gas, and alternative energy. Brazil’s industrial economy has seen significant expansion in recent years, and the country has seen a period of sustained growth. The Brazilian government has implemented policies to expand its openness as a global trading partner, and its focus on increased exports has strengthened its manufacturing industry.
Productivity Improvements Drive Demand
While there have been some changes in Brazil's economy and political environment since AMT applied for MDCP funding in 2012, the trade association predicts a bright future for Brazil. As Brazilian manufacturers strive to improve their productivity and efficiency, U.S. companies that use AMT's Technology Center can provide them with the technology to become more competitive.
